Our School's History

Our school has a rich and fascinating history.  It originally opened as Ravensworth Road School, comprising an infant school, a junior school and even a secondary school!

For several years, the school was known as Mottingham Primary School.  However to mark our 80th anniversary and celebrate our heritage, Mottingham Primary School proudly returned to it's original name: Ravensworth Primary School.

From September 2025, the school changed it's name to Orion Ravensworth, to demonstrate its belonging to the Orion Education Family. At present, Orion Education has 4 primary schools in the local area, Orion Ravensworth, Orion Scotts Park, Orion Mead Road, and Orion Blenheim.

We are incredibly proud of our history, and our gallery below shows just how much our school has evolved over the decades.

The secondary section of the school officially opened on Monday, 12th September 1939, just days after the start of World War II.  Unsurprisingly, the war had a significant impact on attendance during that time.  In fact, the school had to wait until 1940 for air raid shelters to be constructed.

Below you'll find a fascinating collection of entries from the Headteacher's wartime diary, offering a unique glimpse into school life during World War II.

Our current building originally served as the infant school.  In 1989, it was renovated and expanded to house the primary school as we know it today.

You can also see what the school looked like before the new section was added in the 2000s, marking another important chapter in our school's development.
